Description

The Academy Inspire 18 Inch BMX is a lovely bike for the rider that's not quite ready for the step up to a 20 Inch. It's also spec'd correctly for the size with a shorter reach stem, shorter cranks and 8 Inch rise bars. It's got some great features as well with sealed hubs an 3pc cranks along with double wall rims and a forged Alloy stem.

Features

The step before a 20 inch. Built for the rider who is not quite ready for the jump up, with a shorter 40mm reach stem, 152mm cranks and 8.0" rise bars sized to suit.
Sealed bearings front and rear. Academy alloy sealed hubs, a 9T cassette driver on a 14mm axle out back and a sealed Mid bottom bracket: smooth rolling with less to maintain.
3-piece tubular chromoly cranks. 152mm CrMo tubular 3-piece cranks, a 25T Academy sprocket and KMC chain, with the crank length kept short for smaller legs.
Double wall rims, stainless spokes. 18" alloy double wall 36H rims laced with black stainless spokes and wrapped in 18" x 2.125" tyres, a wheelset built for strength.
Forged alloy top load stem. 40mm reach Academy stem with CrMo 8.0" rise bars at 25.2" wide on a 1-1/8" integrated headset, plus an Academy railed seat, 12.2 kg all up.

Assembly information

Your bike ships mostly assembled in the box. Finishing it takes most people 10 to 20 minutes with basic tools, and the video above walks through every step.

Fit the handlebars and line them up with the front wheel
Fit the front wheel, pedals and seat post
Check the brakes and tyre pressure before the first ride

Tools: Allen key set and a 15mm, 17mm or 19mm spanner for the pedals and axle nuts (bikes can vary between these three sizes). A socket is needed if installing pegs.

An 18 inch bike suits a rider of about 122 to 147cm, usually 7 to 11 years old, on an 18 to 18.5 inch top tube. It is the last step before a full size 20 inch.

Sizes overlap on purpose, so personal preference comes into it. If your rider is near 147cm and still growing, look at a 20 inch instead: it is the size they will keep riding.

How to measure

Stand your rider against a wall in the shoes they ride in, heels flat, and mark the top of their head. Measure from the floor to the mark.

Between an 18 and a 20? Take the 20. It is the size they will keep riding, and an 18 gets outgrown quickly.
They should be able to stand over the top tube with both feet flat on the ground.
