Description

Academy bikes are specifically designed to offer the price-conscious customer an entry-level complete bike with geometry and specifications typically reserved for pro-level BMX bikes. This gives riders new to BMX a better overall experience right out the gate.

These same design principles have been followed all the way down to Academys 18 Inch Origin Bike. As the younger generation starts riding BMX, they deserve to have a bike that rides as smoothly as their idols, and with a sealed bearing rear cassette hub and 25/9 gear ratio, the Academy Origin sure helps deliver that experience! Did we mention the glossy black and polished features?

This bike is not designed for jumping and has a rider weight limit of 50 kgs.

Features

  • Pro geometry for first-timers. Academy's entry-level completes borrow the geometry and spec usually reserved for pro-level BMX bikes, so riders new to BMX get a better experience from the start.
  • Hi-Ten frame, 18.0" top tube. Hi-Ten steel frame with a 12.25" rear end, 74.0° head angle and 71° seat angle, plus a Hi-Ten tapered-leg fork and 1-1/8" external headset.
  • Brakes front and rear. Rear alloy U-brake and a front calliper with alloy lever and slick cables, so a new rider has a brake at each end while they learn to control their speed.
  • Cockpit and cranks to suit. 152mm one-piece cranks, 7.5" rise bars at 25.0" wide and a forged alloy top load stem, with 18" x 2.125" tyres on 36H alloy rims.
  • 28/16 freewheel gearing, 9.0 kg. A 28T sprocket drives a 16T freewheel on a steel loose ball hub; rated for riders up to 50 kg and not designed for jumping.

Assembly information

Your bike ships mostly assembled in the box. Finishing it takes most people 10 to 20 minutes with basic tools, and the video above walks through every step.

  • Fit the handlebars and line them up with the front wheel
  • Fit the front wheel, pedals and seat post
  • Check the brakes and tyre pressure before the first ride

Tools: Allen key set and a 15mm, 17mm or 19mm spanner for the pedals and axle nuts (bikes can vary between these three sizes). A socket is needed if installing pegs.

Rather have it done? Ask us about extra assembly before you order, or any local bike shop can finish the build for a small fee.

20 inch BMX sizing

A 20 inch bike is the standard adult BMX and suits riders from about 147cm up. At this wheel size the top tube is what changes the fit, so pick that by height.

Sizes overlap on purpose, so personal preference comes into it. If you land in two bands, riding style breaks the tie: longer for flow, trails and transitions, shorter for technical street and park.

How to measure

Stand your rider against a wall in the shoes they ride in, heels flat, and mark the top of their head. Measure from the floor to the mark.

Top tube is measured from the centre of the seat tube to the centre of the head tube, so it is not the same as the length of the tube you can see.

  • A 20 inch bike is the standard adult BMX and most riders end up there, so do not size a tall child down to a smaller wheel.
  • 22, 24 and 26 inch bikes are adult bikes with a bigger wheel, not bigger frames for taller riders.
  • Size up for stability through trails and transitions. Size down if you want the bike quick and twitchy for spins and grinds.
  • Top tube is fixed, but stem length, fork offset and bar position all shift how roomy the bike feels once you are on it.
