Description

The Black Eye Commando 20 Inch is an entry-level bike designed for beginners, and it comes well spec'd for the job. Up front there is an integrated headset, a 50mm alloy top load stem and Hi-Tensile bars with an 8.5" rise.

The wheels are 20" 36H alloy with double wall rims and 20 x 2.35 DRS Vice tyres, with a sealed bearing 9T cassette hub out back. Tubular chromoly 3-piece 170mm cranks turn on a sealed bearing Mid bottom bracket. Note that pegs are not included with the bike, despite what the owner's manual says.

Features
  • Entry-level bike, built for beginners. Black Eye built the Commando for riders just starting out, and gave it a parts list that is well spec'd for the job.
  • Tubular chromoly 3-piece cranks. 170mm tubular chromoly 3-piece cranks on a sealed bearing Mid bottom bracket: a drivetrain that holds up as the rider's skills grow.
  • Sealed bearing 9T cassette hub. The rear cassette hub runs sealed bearings and a 9T driver, so it spins freely and keeps the grit out without constant adjusting.
  • Wide 2.35" DRS Vice tyres. 20 x 2.35 DRS Vice tyres on 20" 36H alloy wheels with double wall rims: grip to spare, on rims built for strength.
  • Tall 8.5" rise cockpit. Hi-Tensile 8.5" rise bars on a 50mm alloy top load stem with an integrated headset, and note that pegs are not included despite what the owner's manual says.

Assembly information

Your bike ships mostly assembled in the box. Finishing it takes most people 10 to 20 minutes with basic tools, and the video above walks through every step.

  • Fit the handlebars and line them up with the front wheel
  • Fit the front wheel, pedals and seat post
  • Check the brakes and tyre pressure before the first ride

Tools: Allen key set and a 15mm, 17mm or 19mm spanner for the pedals and axle nuts (bikes can vary between these three sizes). A socket is needed if installing pegs.

Stand your rider against a wall in the shoes they ride in, heels flat, and mark the top of their head. Measure from the floor to the mark.

Top tube is measured from the centre of the seat tube to the centre of the head tube, so it is not the same as the length of the tube you can see.

  • A 20 inch bike is the standard adult BMX and most riders end up there, so do not size a tall child down to a smaller wheel.
  • 22, 24 and 26 inch bikes are adult bikes with a bigger wheel, not bigger frames for taller riders.
  • Size up for stability through trails and transitions. Size down if you want the bike quick and twitchy for spins and grinds.
  • Top tube is fixed, but stem length, fork offset and bar position all shift how roomy the bike feels once you are on it.
