Description

FitBikeCo’s MISFIT BALANCE has gone through a few iterations since its introduction. It was a little on the big side, then a little on the small side, and now it’s dialled for an average sized rider with frame/fork geometry that works well. And thanks to a TIG welded steel frame/fork/handlebar it’s a real BMX bike, not a weird plastic toy. Although most of their little ones are dare-devils they’ve still done everything they can to make learning to shred as safe as possible. A vertical rear axle slot keeps the wheel in place even if loose. Domed axle nuts don’t cut like exposed axles, and grips with safety ends all help. To make installing a tire pump easier they have used curved valve stems.

Features

A real BMX, not a toy. TIG welded steel frame, fork and handlebar with geometry now dialled for an average sized rider.
Vertical rear axle slot. The rear wheel stays put even if the axle works loose, so a missed check does not end the ride.
Domed nuts and safety grips. Domed axle nuts do not cut like exposed axles, and the grips have safety ends.
Curved valve stems. Fitting a pump onto small 16H rims is much easier when the valve is not buried against the spokes.
Padded seat, quick release clamp. A flatter, more padded 22.2mm x 120mm integrated combo seat that adjusts without tools as they grow.

Assembly information

Your bike ships mostly assembled in the box. Finishing it takes most people 10 to 20 minutes with basic tools, and the video above walks through every step.

Fit the handlebars and line them up with the front wheel
Fit the front wheel, pedals and seat post
Check the brakes and tyre pressure before the first ride

Tools: Allen key set and a 15mm, 17mm or 19mm spanner for the pedals and axle nuts (bikes can vary between these three sizes). A socket is needed if installing pegs.

A 12 inch bike suits a rider of about 60 to 91cm, usually 2 to 4 years old, on a 12 to 12.5 inch top tube. It is the first bike after a balance bike.

Sizes overlap on purpose, so personal preference comes into it. At this wheel size the top tube barely changes the fit: go by height, and check they can stand over the bike flat footed.

How to measure

Stand your rider against a wall in the shoes they ride in, heels flat, and mark the top of their head. Measure from the floor to the mark.

Between two wheel sizes? Go up. Kids grow into a bike far faster than they grow out of the fun.
They should be able to stand over the top tube with both feet flat on the ground.
