Description

Balance bikes like the Kink Coast teach kids balance and coordination instead of relying on training wheels. What is special about the Coast is the way it combines features and geometry made for children with those of a full size BMX, so it is built for working a child's way up to their first BMX.

An ultra low standover height lets the seat drop as far as it will go, and seat height adjusts from 14.25" to 16.75". It is designed for children aged 2 and up, and comes in Galaxy Gray.

Features

  • Balance first, no training wheels. Kids learn balance and coordination on the Coast rather than relying on training wheels, which makes the step up to a first BMX easier.
  • Ultra low 4.5" standover. The seat drops as low as it will go, so little legs can reach the ground and push off with confidence.
  • Seat height adjusts 14.25" to 16.75". Room to grow through a couple of seasons of pump tracks, footpaths and tracks before the first proper BMX.
  • Full BMX geometry, kid size. A 12" top tube, 7.5" chainstays, a 74° head tube and a 70° seat tube: the numbers of a BMX, scaled down.
  • Kink and Mission parts throughout. Hi-Ten Coast frame and Lance fork, a Kink T500 5" bar, Mission Micro grips and a Mission frontload 30mm stem.

Assembly information

Your bike ships mostly assembled in the box. Finishing it takes most people 10 to 20 minutes with basic tools, and the video above walks through every step.

  • Fit the handlebars and line them up with the front wheel
  • Fit the front wheel, pedals and seat post
  • Check the brakes and tyre pressure before the first ride

Tools: Allen key set and a 15mm, 17mm or 19mm spanner for the pedals and axle nuts (bikes can vary between these three sizes). A socket is needed if installing pegs.

Rather have it done? Ask us about extra assembly before you order, or any local bike shop can finish the build for a small fee.

12 inch BMX sizing

A 12 inch bike suits a rider of about 60 to 91cm, usually 2 to 4 years old, on a 12 to 12.5 inch top tube. It is the first bike after a balance bike.

Rider heightWheel sizeTop tube
60 to 91cm12"12 to 12.5"
81 to 106cm14"14 to 14.5"
96 to 122cm16"16 to 16.5"

147 to 157cm20"19.75 to 20.25"
157 to 168cm20"20 to 20.5"
168 to 175cm20"20.25 to 20.75"
175 to 183cm20"20.5 to 21"
183 to 190cm and up20"20.75 to 21.5"
160cm and up22"21 to 22.25"
160cm and up24"21.75 to 22"
160cm and up26"22 to 23"

Sizes overlap on purpose, so personal preference comes into it. At this wheel size the top tube barely changes the fit: go by height, and check they can stand over the bike flat footed.

How to measure

Stand your rider against a wall in the shoes they ride in, heels flat, and mark the top of their head. Measure from the floor to the mark.

  • Between two wheel sizes? Go up. Kids grow into a bike far faster than they grow out of the fun.
  • They should be able to stand over the top tube with both feet flat on the ground.

Not sure? Send us their height and we will tell you what we would put them on.
